The Manchester Evening News has set up a fundraiser for the historic youth centre, Salford Lads Club.

The news comes as the club, which opened in 1904 and has helped thousands of boys and girls in the area, faces closure due to financial difficulties. It rose to fame as the backdrop for an iconic image featuring The Smiths in the 1980s.

Salford Lads Club needs £250,000 by the end of November to secure its future.

Musicians, actors and creatives have rallied behind the fundraiser, including the former Hollies and Crosby, Stills and Nash singer Graham Nash, who has donated £10,000.

Emerging band ROLLA have announced that they will donate all of the ticket sales and merchandise proceeds from their November 15th gig at the club to the fundraiser, telling the MEN that they “will fight for it to stay open.”

Former Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley backed the campaign, telling the MEN that the club holds a special place in her heart due to what it provided for her Grandad.

Tyldesley told the newspaper: “My grandad, who grew up on Weaste Lane, would be 90 now and I know there will be hundreds of families like ours who have had a family member supported there. Now it opens to boys and girls and we should be championing these places, and trying so hard for these places, they are essential.”

Elsewhere, Manchester music legend Peter Hook told the MEN that “They have inspired a generation of people in a really run-down area. The volunteers do so much with no pay, it’s actually humbling. The fact they have the gym in there, and all the facilities, it has been an inspiration the way they’ve done it.”

The Charlatans frontman, Tim Burgess, shared the fundraiser link and echoed the statements with a social media post that said: “@salfordladsclub has been there for so many people over the years – a real community hub, with a place in music folklore gathered along the way.”

He went on to write: “Well, they need us now, so let’s rally round and help them out. Dig deep, it’s for the worthiest of causes.”
