Government announces 20% business rates cut for pubs, clubs and live music venues

Pubs, clubs and eligible live-music venues in England are set to receive a 20% reduction in business rates from April next year, under a newly announced government measure.

The policy is expected to save a typical pub around £1,100 annually, with the government committing approximately £100 million a year to the relief.

For promoters and venue operators, the inclusion of clubs alongside pubs and live-music venues is a significant part of the announcement. It could provide welcome support for businesses continuing to navigate high operating costs across the night-time economy.

Full eligibility criteria are expected to be confirmed at the Autumn Budget. The largest live-music venues are currently expected to be excluded, and further detail will be needed to establish which venues and operators can benefit.

The government has said the policy will be funded by reviewing existing tax reliefs for businesses it considers not to make a positive contribution to local communities. It has also announced plans to strengthen action against online marketplace sellers that do not meet their tax obligations.

Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, said: 

“The inclusion of clubs alongside pubs and live music venues is particularly important and demonstrates a broader recognition of the vital economic, cultural and social contribution made by the night-time economy.”

He added that the reduction could provide meaningful relief for businesses facing sustained cost pressures.

With the scheme due to begin next April, venue operators and promoters should look out for the full details in this year’s autumn Budget.
