UK Events Industry Urges Visa Reform to Stay Competitive

The UK’s events industry is facing significant challenges due to complex visa regulations and post-Brexit barriers, according to a recent white paper by The Business of Events (TBOE).

The report highlights how the absence of specific provisions for event professionals in the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) has created a fragmented and costly operating environment, threatening the sector’s global competitiveness.

TBOE’s white paper outlines several key recommendations to address these issues:

  • Reopen the TCA: Negotiate an events-specific visa exemption to facilitate smoother cross-border operations.
  • Develop Clear Guidance: Provide country-by-country information to help event professionals navigate EU work requirements.
  • Establish Centralised Support Services: Create resources to assist with visa planning and compliance.
  • Integrate Visa Planning: Encourage event organisations to incorporate visa considerations into project timelines and budgets.
  • Foster Industry Collaboration: Promote increased cooperation between UK and EU industry bodies to develop mutual understanding and workable solutions.

Mike Fletcher, Director of News and Content at TBOE, emphasised the urgency of these reforms, stating:

“The absence of a dedicated visa category for event delivery professionals is stifling our industry. Without urgent reform, we risk losing our standing on the global stage.”

The report serves as a call to action for policymakers and industry leaders to implement these recommendations and protect one of the UK’s most vibrant and globally recognised creative sectors.
