New Bill to Set Maximum Ticket Prices for Music and Sport Events

Labour MP Rupa Huq has proposed the Sale of Tickets (Sporting & Cultural Events) Bill in Parliament.

If passed, the bill would require promoters of music and sports events to inform fans of the maximum ticket price before the start of the buying process.

The proposal comes after backlash towards the dynamic pricing model used for Oasis reunion tour tickets, which saw fans waiting for hours in online queues and unexpectedly facing ticket price hikes. Tickets originally advertised at £148 were raised to £355.

The band, who recently reunited, said they didn’t know that dynamic pricing would be used.

Sky News reported that Ms Huq, the MP for Ealing Central and Acton, said she was “scandalised” by the Oasis ticketing situation and felt that people were pressured to pay the high prices after waiting for six hours.

Ms Huq said: “There needs to be some fairness in the process because it feels as if the consumer balance is wrong and the ticket merchants can literally double it, triple it, think of a number, infinity and beyond.”

She continued: “This won’t outlaw dynamic pricing, it’s just introducing transparency and certainty because there is a place for the market as well.”

The bill has received support from MPs across different parties. However, it will need government support to progress.

Ministers have said that the government will launch a consultation on the secondary ticketing market in autumn.

The Sale of Tickets (Sporting & Cultural Events) Bill will receive its second reading in Parliament on 6th December.
