Music Fans’ Voice Report Highlights Strong Support for Live Music Sector

A new fan-led review, published in March 2025 by CGA in partnership with Music Venue Trust, reveals key insights into the behaviour, preferences and concerns of UK live music fans — and highlights vital opportunities for event organisers.

Based on a survey of over 8,100 fans, the research shows that grassroots venues are the beating heart of the live music ecosystem, with 41% of fans attending them monthly or more. However, closures are threatening access: 58% of respondents reported the loss of a locally significant venue since 2020.

Accessibility emerged as another critical focus — with 8% of fans identifying as disabled and many calling for improvements such as better wheelchair access, nearby parking, and sensory spaces.

While live music remains central to UK culture, cost pressures are a growing concern. Financial constraints and dynamic ticket pricing were key factors causing a drop in attendance, particularly among the 18–34 age group. Half of fans surveyed had encountered surge pricing, yet only 11% said it was communicated clearly — fuelling widespread distrust of the practice.

The review also found a strong appetite for fairer ticketing:

  • 97% of fans believe reselling tickets for profit should be outlawed.
  • 73% support adding a small, transparent restoration levy to tickets to help sustain venues.
  • 93% would back a £1 levy on arena and stadium tickets to directly support grassroots venues.

From a promotional standpoint, social media remains essential, with 82% of fans discovering events via artist or venue profiles. Word of mouth also continues to be powerful, with 68% relying on recommendations from friends and family.

There were positive signs for venue revenue too. Fans reported spending an average of £478 annually on live music entry, with drinks remaining a reliable secondary income stream — particularly at festivals, grassroots venues, and nightclubs.

Finally, safety and inclusivity were high on the agenda. Grassroots venues rated among the safest spaces for fans, and 69% of respondents supported drug testing services at events to further improve welfare measures.

Key Takeaways for Event Organisers:

  • Prioritise accessibility improvements to welcome a broader audience.
  • Invest in local community events to combat venue closures and maintain loyalty.
  • Ensure ticket pricing is transparent and consider flexible options like early bird discounts or monthly payment plans.
  • Maintain active, engaging social media profiles for event and artist pages.
  • Embrace fan-backed initiatives like restoration levies and resale regulations to build trust and long-term sustainability.
