Manchester’s Co-op Live has been recognised as one of the most sustainable large-scale music venues in the world, earning a “Highly Commended” rating from A Greener Future’s (AGF) 2025 A Greener Arena assessment.

The rating follows a 12-month review of the venue’s environmental and operational performance, and positions Co-op Live as a frontrunner in sustainable arena development. The certification acknowledges several achievements in energy use, infrastructure, accessibility, and environmental impact.

Green Design and Operations

Opened in 2024, Co-op Live operates on 100% renewable energy and incorporates a range of sustainable, social and accessibility features, including:

  • Rainwater-flushing toilets
  • Air-source heat pumps and LED lighting
  • Smart building management systems
  • Zero waste to landfill policies
  • Over 2,700m² of green walls, wildflowers, and tree planting
  • Step-free access, gender-neutral toilets, hearing loops, and quiet rooms
  • 240 covered cycle spaces and strong public transport links

The venue also launched with the goal of reducing food-related emissions and supporting community access through inclusive design.

Live Events and Sustainability in Action

The arena recently hosted Massive Attack, who partnered with Co-op Live to deliver a fully plant-based show, further demonstrating the venue’s ability to align with artist-led environmental goals.

The show, which took place on the 5th of June, featured a vegan menu and production approach designed to lower the event’s carbon footprint, aligning with the band’s long-standing sustainability agenda.

What it means for organisers, venues and suppliers

The AGA rating provides a strong example for venues and event professionals looking to meet sustainability targets. For organisers, it offers confidence in working with a venue that prioritises environmental standards and audience inclusivity. For brands, sponsors, and suppliers, it opens up new opportunities to align with green initiatives and deliver services that meet increasingly high sustainability expectations.
