The Wales Millenium Centre (WMC) has announced plans to build a brand-new, 550-capacity immersive theatre.
Emerging technology like virtual reality will be at the forefront of the venture, with management hoping that it will provide a platform for storytelling and revolutionise the digital and immersive arts landscape in Wales.
Alongside the use of cutting-edge technology, the theatre will provide production, rehearsal and training facilities. Over the next 10 years, the venue is expected to engage over 10,000 participants in creative training at the WMC, enabling its existing youth projects to grow.
It will complement the WMC’s existing venues like the 1,900-capacity Donald Gordon Theatre, the 250-capacity Weston Studio and the 150-capacity cabaret venue.
Engaging with new technology has been a big part of the WMC’s work, with the new venue following on from the success of Bocs, the WMC’s dedicated space for augmented and virtual reality experiences.

Since opening its doors in 2022, Bocs has attracted 31,000 visitors across 18 immersive experiences, as well as supporting artists to explore their practice through alternative platforms and technologies.
The new venue is set to be built opposite the main WMC building, and it will be a key part of the ‘Cardiff Live’ initiative alongside the planned £250m Cardiff Indoor Arena, council offices, exhibition halls and community areas.
Speaking about the new venue, Cllr Russell Goodway, Cabinet Member for Investment and Development at Cardiff Council said: “It will epitomise our approach of supporting production as well as performance, providing facilities to develop our own cultural offer as well as our local communities.”
Graeme Farrow, the WMC’s chief creative and content officer, said: “This new space will continue our work at the intersection of technology and the arts, allowing artists to explore and experiment with multimedia approaches to telling stories.”
