Massive Attack’s headline performance at LIDO Festival on 6th June marked a major step forward for sustainable live music, with the event site running exclusively on battery power for 32 hours.
The breakthrough was made possible by Grid Faeries x Ecotricity, who supplied the green energy infrastructure for LIDO. The collaboration has previously supported the Charlie Gillett stage at WOMAD and Glastonbury Festival, and will continue its work at All Points East this August.
Described as a “landmark moment for green festivals,” the initiative highlights a growing shift away from diesel-powered setups at major events. According to A Greener Future, the festival industry currently consumes more than 12 million litres of diesel each year.

“LIDO was a first for London, an outdoor, main stage, run entirely on green energy, and it won’t be the last,” said Ecotricity founder Dale Vince OBE. “It’s time to get diesel out of our festivals. Grid Faeries x Ecotricity are here to show how there’s another way to power the live music scene.”
Claire O’Neill, Co-Founder of Grid Faeries and A Greener Future, added: “We’ve shown that world-class headline acts can be powered cleanly, and that ‘business as usual’ is no longer good enough.”
With more festivals turning to cleaner alternatives, the LIDO event could be a defining example of how the industry moves towards a more sustainable future.
