Hackney Council Announces the Good Evening Hackney Plan

Hackney Council has launched a new nighttime strategy aimed at enhancing safety, supporting venues, and ensuring the borough remains one of London’s leading after-dark destinations.

The Good Evening Hackney plan outlines how the Council and its partners will promote the borough’s thriving night-time economy. Key priorities include public safety, inclusive access to culture, and supporting venues in adapting to changing leisure habits.

One of the core elements is a renewed focus on nighttime safety. Welfare pop-ups run by the Council’s enforcement team are already active in Shoreditch, offering free water, phone charging, and safety equipment to eventgoers. A new initiative will also enable people to have their phones tagged with unique QR codes, making stolen devices easier to trace.

A new ‘Hackney Nights‘ map is being developed to help residents and visitors move around the borough confidently after dark. It will highlight public toilets, safe routes, night transport, and accredited venues. Venues that sign up for accreditation will have access to staff training on key issues like preventing drink spiking, as well as noise reduction guidance to help them avoid complaints and potential closures.

Cllr Susan Fajana-Thomas OBE, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Regulatory Services, said the strategy was essential to “balancing the opportunities and challenges” of Hackney’s evening economy. “It aims to ensure that local residents and businesses are the first to benefit… and that the borough stays safe, inclusive and vibrant at night,” she said.

The strategy also includes support for late-night street food, shopping, and cultural events, with extended outdoor dining in parts of Shoreditch backed by £100,000 from the Mayor of London’s Summer Streets Fund.

Hackney Council will also work with local organisations to offer arts and culture discounts to low-income families, reflecting a wider goal of ensuring the borough’s nightlife remains accessible to all.
