Boomtown Festival Gets Green Light to Increase Capacity

Boomtown Festival has been granted official planning permission to increase its capacity by almost 20%, allowing up to 76,999 attendees at future editions of the event. The approval, granted by the South Downs National Park Authority, marks a major milestone for the organisers, aligning the planning permissions with the licence already held by the festival.

The capacity previously stood at 65,999, but this uplift opens the door for Boomtown to welcome nearly 11,000 more ticket holders, spread out across its sprawling, immersive site at the Matterley Estate near Winchester. While not explicitly tied to a specific year, the approval enables organisers to increase audience numbers as early as the next edition, if operational plans allow.

Bigger Crowds, More Spectacle

Boomtown co-founder Luke Mitchell said the increased capacity gives the team greater flexibility to invest in stage production and better distribute venues across the site. With the 2024 edition selling out quickly and thousands left on the waiting list, the uplift helps the festival meet growing demand while supporting its long-term sustainability and creative ambition.

It also unlocks previously unused areas of the festival site, such as iconic hillside zones and woodland spaces that once hosted the Lions Den and Psy Forest stages. These changes aim to bring back fan-favourite areas while easing crowding across the site.

Hydrogen-Powered Stage & Environmental Commitments

In addition to the capacity increase, Boomtown 2025 will debut a new stage powered entirely by hydrogen fuel cell generators. The HYDRO stage, developed in partnership with clean energy firm Hydrologiq, is part of the festival’s wider mission to reduce carbon emissions on-site. Unlike diesel generators, the hydrogen power system produces only water vapour as a by-product.

Organisers have also pledged a 10% biodiversity net gain and enhanced measures around ecology, sound, lighting, and transport. As part of the planning conditions, 1,000 Sunday tickets will continue to be reserved for residents, reinforcing Boomtown’s connection with the surrounding community.

Looking Ahead

With planning permission now secured through 2029, Boomtown is well-positioned to continue pushing creative boundaries and delivering unforgettable festival experiences.
